Poetry Corner Regarding Proposal for the Construction of a Light Rail System in Kansas City! Who Is Paying Attention? sestina Once, in a far away place, the City of Kansas was a realm full of riches. It was a tall city. Short-sighted people created the Power and Light District. Many years before they depended on rail for transport. Later, fuel prices became atrocious. Federal election news fills the airwaves with crap. One fool proposed a non-smoking law: the king of crap forgot about friendships. The City of Kansas’ voters were hoodwinked and ensured the atrocious passage of the law. Smaller clubs around the city were unfairly treated: they decided to rail against the heavy-handed law. The Power and Light District and casino’s strategy turns out the light of increasing numbers of smaller owners with this crap. City planners failed the people in the town by the rail. Portions of the city’s jail remain closed in Kansas City. Water pours from the street at Broadway and Tenth. City planners look myopically forward: The atrocious plans for building a Light Rail system is atrocious thinking when the city will not provide funds for light in the empty wings of its jail. The homeless find city judges unable to house them when picked up for the crap they pull with their crimes against the people of Kansas City. Vagrants and hobos used to ride the rail. A few seek to line golden pockets from the Light Rail construction. Property needed along the atrocious Light Rail corridor will displace many Kansas City homes and businesses. Will people see the light in time? This idea is a large load of crap! The people need: better streets, we must have city services intact, jails open, sewers flowing. City officials seem to have forgotten the rail that made us grow in the past will now cause us lots of crap. Street crime rises: drug dealers swagger with atrocious pride. The weakest among us suffer from light- hearted indifference found within the City of Kansas. We seem to be suckling crap from a bottle the City of Kansas holds for us. If I can’t get that, I will gladly settle for a piece of marble cake. I can’t think of a single flavor that I don’t like in ice-cream. You could say without a doubt that I’m one who likes dessert! Of course, one cannot live only on that. There’s horehound candy and other kinds that I love just as much. If it’s nice and sweet I’m sure to like it! What would life be like without things sweet? I can’t imagine living in a world that doesn’t have cherry pie! Lemon drops, root beer barrels are my all time favorite candy. From a slice of angel food to devil’s food are the kinds of cakes I enjoy sneaking. Even thick tapioca pudding is a great dessert! Remember summers wearing your arms out turning ice-cream in a home-made maker? Home-made’s great vanilla ice-cream. People have compared being in love to something sweet. I’ve even compared a woman’s features to an apple pie. Couples may still call each other pet names like ‘sweet-cake’. Birth names have evolved to the extent that the name Candy has become an accepted name for a girl. I truly hope that Candy remembers on her wedding day to serve guests lots of ice-cream! I’ve a long-standing regard for the frosting on wedding cake that’s so thick and creamy. A husband says his wife’s so sweet when she does something nice. I know she’ll cook meringue pie for him to eat. Wives really know that making him a dessert will make their life happier. But, when he’s been bad, no dessert after supper or later in their bed. I know that without candy this world would be a somber, somber place. Without any pie things would be sadder still. If they took away our ice-cream what would happen then? Life without luscious sweet might not even be worth living. Were they to take away cake from us, I would lose all hope. History tells we must have cake, at least, for those who have no bread to eat. Imagine a dessert having chocolate pie stacked with whipped cream; rich and sweet that concoction would be. If one were to add in bits of candy to the bowl it would be delicious. A bowl of cherry ice-cream on the side might be enough unless a small piece of rhubarb pie can be had to top things off. Sweet from layered allspice cake to freshly-warmed blueberry pie are desserts I’ve always loved. Dairy Queen had a great idea: Chunks of candy in ice-cream!
